Sushiyaki
Fresno, CA
The Sushiyaki restaurant may have housed the Jet Coffee Shop originally. The building appears to be from the 1960s. [map]

Lola's Tacos Ricos
Fresno, CA
Quick N Split Burgers
Gardena, CA
Lola's Tacos Ricos is a walk-up and drive-thru stand. I don't know when it was built or if it housed another business originally. In 2019, the building had several fires and remained gutted in 2020. In 2022, the building began housing Tamales-2-Go. For more, see this website. [map]

The Quick N Split Burgers building appears to have been inspired by the early McDonald's buildings. This restaurant was previously Durango Burgers but I don't know if that was the original occupant. The building is from 1961. This photo is from 2013. By 2015, the building was housing a Los Alberto's Mexican Food restaurant. [map]

Estrada's Grill
Garden Grove, CA
The Estrada's Grill building has folded plate details on all four sides. It housed the Guacamole Grille before that. Does anyone know what was here originally? [map]

Algemac's Coffee Shop
Glendale, CA
Algemac's Coffee Shop was built in 1937. The 1959 remodeling was designed by Robert Vaughn. The restaurant closed in 2006 and was gutted in 2008. Part of the building was saved and is now used as a community center. The "Algemac" letters on the side of the building were replaced with "Glendale." For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4. [map]

Great White Hut
Glendale, CA
2012: 2015:
The Great White Hut was established in 1947. Just before this photo was taken in 2012, the building was repainted. It went from white and blue to white and red. The stools were reupholstered and the neon was added to the front of the building. By 2015, the building was painted back to white and blue. By 2017, it was red and white again. For more, see this website. [map]

Dad's Luncheonette
Half Moon Bay, CA
Dad's Luncheonette opened in 2017 in a former caboose which had been sitting on the Shoreline Station property for decades. The caboose was built for Southern Pacific Railroad in 1942. [map]

Chips Restaurant
Hawthorne, CA
Chips Restaurant was designed by Harry Harrison and built in 1957. In 2024, the rusted sign letters were replaced with thinner replicas. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Val's Burgers
Hayward, CA
Val's Burgers opened in 1958. [map]

former Sheri's Restaurant
Inglewood, CA
2008: 2013:
Sheri's Restaurant was designed by Martin Stern, Jr. and opened in 1958. It was going to be a Pick's Restaurant but, while it was being built, the name was changed to Sheri's. The building later housed the Farmer's Restaurant. It was known as GG's Restaurant when these 2008 photos were taken. In 2009, the building was painted red and the sign black in preparation to reopen the place as a nightclub. I don't know if that ever happened. The building has housed Cafetales Restaurant since at least 2011. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Brolly Hut
Inglewood, CA
The Brolly Hut was built designed by Victor Miller and built in 1968. It was originally known as the Bumbershoot Cafe. Bumbershoot and Brolly are both slang words for umbrella. There are two other Brolly Hut locations in Lawndale and Torrance. However, I don't know if they were related. The buildings and signs look nothing like those at this location. For more, see this website. [map]

Anthony's Fish Grotto
La Mesa, CA
Anthony's Fish Grotto opened its first location in San Diego in 1946. That location and the one in La Jolla are gone now. This La Mesa location with its unique clam shell entrance opened in 1961 and is still operating. The restaurant features a grotto-like interior and dining next to its private lake. For more, see this website. [map]

Chris's Burgers
La Puente, CA
Chris's Burgers was probably built in the early 1960s. [map]

Abuela's Kitchen
Lake Elsinore, CA
Martha's Donuts
Lakewood, CA
The Abuela's Kitchen building was probably built in the 1960s. I don't know what the original business was but the building has housed a Mexican restaurant since at least 2007. [map]

The Martha's Donuts building and the strip mall behind it appear to be from the 1960s. I don't know if Martha's was the original tenant but the takeout windows appear to be original and probably indicate that this has always been a food-related business. Although the name on the building was still Martha's, it had been Sambath's Donuts for years. This photo is from 2016. By 2021, the building was vacant and "Martha's Donuts" was painted over. [map]

La Posada Restaurant
Lakewood, CA

2008:

Sunrise Cafe

2013:

This restaurant building was built in 1957. At some point, it was known as the Santa Fe Station Cafe. I don't know if that was the original name. The building housed the La Posada Restaurant until around 2010 when it became the Sunrise Cafe. [map]
