Washington Fire Department
West Sacramento, CA
Birds Love Us
Whittier, CA
The Washington Fire Department was built from 1939-1940 with WPA funding. The building had been vacant since 1997. In 2016, the building was renovated for Burgers & Brew, its current occupant. [map]

The Birds Love Us building was built in 1941. I don't know what business it housed originally. [map]

Cool-A-Coo Building
Whittier, CA

2008:

2013:
The Cool-A-Coo Building was built in 1930 for the Whittier Ice Cream plant. It's unclear as to when production of Cool-A-Coo ice cream began here. I don't know if the Whittier Ice Cream Co. changed its name to the Cool-A-Coo Ice Cream Co. or if they were two separate companies. "Cool-A-Coos" are a vanilla ice cream sandwich between oatmeal cookies, covered with chocolate. The Cool-A-Coo lettering on the rooftop sign was still faintly visible beneath the white paint in the 2008 photo above. The building has been restored but appears to still be vacant in 2020. Cool-A-Coos are still sold at Dodger Stadium and marketed as "Mr. Cool" and sold locally by the El Monte Dairy. [map]

Lou Henry Hoover School
Whittier, CA
The Lou Henry Hoover School was built in 1938. [map]

Whittier High School
Whittier, CA
Most of the buildings at Whittier High School were found unsafe after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. Rebuilding took place from 1933-1940. [map]

St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church

The St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church appears to be from the 1930s. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]
