California Wilshire Gas Stations

(hit "refresh" to get the most recent version of this page; click on photos for larger images)

The Wilshire stations described below had unique canopies pierced by spear-like supports. They were built in the late 1950s. In 1960, these stations were rebranded as Gulf stations when Gulf bought out Wilshire. While these stations were primarily built in California, there is at least one station in Tacoma, WA.

former station
Ontario, CA
2008: 2013:
This former station in Ontario was probably also originally a Wilshire station. The building has housed a series of repair shops in recent years. [map]

G&H Gas station [gone]
Garden Grove, CA
Canepa's Car Wash
Stockton, CA
The G&H Gas station had the same style of canopy supports as those shown in the rows above. However, the canopy itself was different. I suspect this was built as a Wilshire station and the canopy was modified at some point. In 2018, the canopy was gone.

The Canepa's Car Wash canopy is pierced by four supports. I suspect this was either a Wilshire station originally or built by the same company. [map]

Fresno, CA
This former Wilshire station has housed Audio Innovations since at least 2007. [map]

Sacramento, CA
2008: 2015:

United Oil station (now Union 76)
Compton, CA
2014: 2015:
These two gas stations apparently sold the same brand originally. I don't know what company produced these canopies with boomerang shaped supports.

The photo of the former station shown on the left was taken in 2008. It was still there in 2014 but gone by 2015.

The United Oil station photo is from 2014. Later that year, the station was rebranded as a Union 76 station. [map]
