Coney Island Cafe
San Francisco, CA
Horseshoe Tavern
San Francisco, CA
The Coney Island Cafe sign is displayed inside Miller's East Coast Deli. I don't know where it was installed originally.

The Horseshoe Tavern was established in 1934. This sign might be from then or much later. There was originally a top panel with a horse and horseshoe graphic. In 1995, that panel fell and was damaged. It is now in a private collection. For more, see this website. [map]

Golden Boy Pizza
San Francisco, CA
La Pantera Cafe
San Francisco, CA
Golden Boy Pizza opened in 1978. This sign is probably from then. A second location opened in San Mateo in 2011 with an identical sign. When that location closed in 2012, the sign was removed and is now located inside the Neon Works sign shop in Emeryville, CA. [map]

The La Pantera Cafe is gone but this sign remains. The sign appears to be from the 1950s or earlier. [map]

Marquard's Smoke Shop closed in 2004 but the sign remains. The City declared the sign a landmark. It appears to be from the 1950s or earlier. In 2016, the neon was removed and the sign was entirely covered with black paint. The clock is gone. [map]

The Western Manufacturing Co. is long gone but this sign remains. It is probably from the 1950s and originally had neon. [map]

The Page bar opened in 2004. Around 1936, Pal's Rendezvous opened at this location. It not known if it was a liquor store or a bar. By 1947, it was advertised as Pal's Rendezvous Cocktail and Fine Foods. The bar had several other names from the 1960s through the 1980s. From 1994-2004, it operated as Chances. The text panel was probably adapted or replaced each time the name changed. The current sign might be from the 1950s or 1960s. The freestanding neon cocktail might be from earlier. [map]

Tony Nik's Cafe
San Francisco, CA
Tony Nik's Cafe opened in 1933 as Tony Nicco's Cafe. This sign is probably from then. Around 1951, a new owner changed the name to Tony Nik's. The "Nicco's" must have been repainted as "Nik's" then. The sign had been in bad shape for decades with rusting ripple tin panels and black paint. The sign was restored in 2023 by Manny Fabregas, Peterson Neon, Tony Wells Electrical, and SF Neon. [map]

Garland Hotel
San Francisco, CA
The Garland Hotel was built in 1913. This canopy sign was probably built in the late 1920s or 1930s. The original ripple tin panels had been covered for decades with other sign panels. From 2021-2023, the sign was uncovered and restored by Neon Works with a grant from the Office of Economic and Workforce Development SF Shines project. [map]

Gaspare's Pizza House & Italian Restaurant opened in 1985. The projecting sign was built in 1958 and originally advertised for Vince's Pizza House. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Elite Cafe
San Francisco, CA
2017: 2018: 2020:
The Elite Cafe sign originally advertised for the Lincoln Grill which opened here in 1932. This sign may be from then. The sign later advertised for the Asia Cafe. The Elite Cafe reworked the sign when it opened in 1981. In 2017, the sign caught fire during maintenance. The "GR" of the original Grill lettering became visible under the burned off layers of paint. In 2018, the sign was restored and reinstalled by Neon Works of Oakland, CA. In 2020, the neon was removed and letters were painted over. In 2021, the sign was still black with letters at the bottom for the Tailor's Son restaurant. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

The 19th Avenue Liquors sign may be from the 1950s. The bulb arrow may have been added later. [map]

Siegel's, a men's and boy's clothing store, opened in 1889. This sign appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s. Although the neon was gone, the tin border remains intact. Around 2022, a panel reading "Mission" was added to the top and plastic letters were added below for "Food Center." [map]
