The Muncie Liquors store was built in 1965 as Chic's Liquors when it was owned by Chic Haughey. [map]
This building and the Ruben's building below were built with the same concrete shell, "Uni-roof" design which was used in Marion, IN for several buildings including the Wilkins House which was designed by Fran E. Schroeder and built in 1963 for Arnold Wilkins. Wilkins then had the Uni-roof design patented for his construction company. A fire station and a dry cleaners were built in Marion using this design. However, those buildings were demolished. For more, see this website. |

This Ruben's building shares the same design as the Chic's Liquors location described above. Originally, this restaurant was known as Arman's. This hobo statue was designed by Richard Kishel and produced by his Art Forms Workshop in Muncie, IN in 1967. I assume the building was from the same time. Its design may have been inspired by the statues produced for the Hobo Joe's coffee shop chain. In 2025, Ruben's closed and the building began housing Arnie's Dog House. The Ruben's sign was removed. The statue was sold at auction and its location is unknown. [map]
There was at least one other Arman's with this Hobo statue. It might have been the one in Valparaiso, IN which is gone now. A statue turned up in Merrillville, IN but it is also gone. Another statue (original location unknown) was installed in Pana, IL sometime after 2018. The Arman's in Gary has a plastic hobo sign. There is nothing special about the building. [map] |
