Lions
Buffalo, NY
There are four marble Lions in Buffalo at the base of the McKinley Memorial. They were sculpted by Alexander Phimister Proctor in 1907. The sleeping lions are a tribute to the loss of President McKinley. He was assassinated in Buffalo at the opening of the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. The lions are 12 feet long and symbolize strength. For more, see this website. [map]

Leo the Lion
West Chester, OH
Leo the Lion was part of a pair of sculptures that came from Germany and were installed in 1866 on the roof of the Windisch-Muhlhauser Brewing Co. in Cincinnati. In 1933, the brewery became the Burger Brewing Company. It closed around 1973 and the statues were moved to a farm. In 2024, Leo was moved to Beckett Park in West Chester. The other sculpture, Leona the Lion, is in a private collection. [map]

Mick and Mack were originally installed at the estate of Jacob Hoffner. They have been installed at McMicken Hall at the University of Cincinnati since 1904. For more, see this website. [map]
