former Pure Oil station
Fort Gaines, GA
This former Pure Oil station was built in 1935. In 1959, the building housed Todd's Service Station and Automotive Repair. In 2003, the owner renovated and converted the building into an ice cream shop and car wash. The building housed the New Image hair salon when these photos were taken in 2007. The building has the original light fixtures and tin ceiling but the blue tiles have been replaced with a copper roof. In taking apart the freestanding sign, the owner discovered that the Pure became a Union 76 station and later the Enocher Automotive and Detail Shop. A pristine Pure Oil sign was underneath. Canopies providing shade were common in the South and this is an example of the smaller version. By 2013, the building did not appear to be in commercial use. [map]
