former Carver's [gone]
Henderson, NC
I believe these Carver's restaurants were originally Tastee-Freez Big T locations. Both of these locations were open when these photos were taken in 2010. However, by 2014, both buildings had been remodeled beyond recognition. At that point, one of them was a burger place while the other was a tax office.

Milton, FL
former Tastee-Freez [gone]
Laurel, DE
This Milton location was still using the Big T name when this photo was taken in 2010. However, locals referred to it as the Tastee-Freez. In 2013, the building was significantly remodeled. The grooved roof is gone now and the name Tastee-Freez is featured prominently on the building. [map]

This Laurel location was the last surviving Tastee-Freez in Delaware. It was built as a walk-up in the 1950s. This roof and dining room were added in the 1970s. This photo is from 2011. By 2014, the building was housing the Laurel Diner. The Tastee signs had been removed but the blue, grooved roof was still there. By 2018, the building was either rebuilt or completely remodeled and housing a Smash n' Dash. [photo thanks Glenn Van Fleet]

There was a Big T Tastee-Freez in Laurel, MD which is gone now. That location was built onto an old McDonald's building. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The examples shown here have two or three vertical grooves in the roof. The Laurel, MD location had five grooves. I believe all of the locations built in this style were called "Big T"s. There are only a few Tastee-Freez locations with this design that I know of that are still operating including these in Chase City, VA, Crewe, VA, and Kenbridge, VA. The Stanley, VA location still has the original roof but it now houses an Italian restaurant.

If you come across other examples of these buildings, I'd love to know about them.

I have only seen the Tastee-Freez buildings with this A-frame design shown below in California and Oregon. It seemed to be an attempt to branch out in a more serious way beyond ice cream. The buildings appear to be from the 1960s.

Perris, CA
This Tastee-Freez is the most intact A-frame location that I know of. It still operates as a Tastee-Freez and has an original sign. I believe these signs preceded the ones like the one in Huntington Beach shown below. [map]

former Tastee-Freez
Rancho Cordova, CA
former Tastee-Freez
Costa Mesa, CA
This Tastee-Freez building design used the same style sign as those shown above at the former locations in Huntington Beach and Anaheim. They appear to be from the 1960s. If anyone knows of other still-existing examples of this building design, I'd love to hear from you.

The Rancho Cordova location how houses a Tugboat Fish & Chips. [map]

former Tastee-Freez
El Cajon, CA
This former Tastee-Freez now houses Silva's Taco Shop. I have not see a Tastee-Freez building like this before but the adapted sign is immediately recognizable. The original Tastee-Freez signs of this design had bits of snow on top and hanging down. This is the only one left that has that. [map]

former Tastee-Freez
Gallup, NM
This former Tastee-Freez was here by 1969 and operating as Guy's Tastee-Freez. There was originally an ice cream cone on top of the sign like those shown above. This Tastee-Freez was still operating in 1976. I don't know when it closed. The business was housing the Route 66 Drive-In & Diner in the early 2000s. By 2016, the building was housing Teriyaki House II. By 2018, it was housing the Oasis Mediterranean restaurant. This building did not appear to have the peaked roof like the other buildings shown above with the same style signs. It looks like it had the slots on the side of the roof like those shown at the top of this page. However, I have never seen canopies like these at other Tastee-Freez locations. [map]
