Varsity Drive-in
Atlanta, GA
The Varsity Drive-in opened in 1928 and is famous for its chili dogs, onion rings and atmosphere. It is supposedly the world's largest drive-in and fast food operation. The Varsity is open 24 hours. It has "curb-men" (the Varsity has always used men as car hops) and two double canopies. Inside, there's a continuously moving conveyor belt bringing food from the cooks to the 150' ordering counter. There are five TV viewing rooms with school-desk seating. The interior can seat 800 customers. The walk-up counter inside is carnival-like with the staff barking "what'll ya HAVE, what'll ya HAVE!". There is also a gift shop inside selling Varsity t-shirts, hats, etc. The place has changed delightfully little over the years. There are now four other locations and a Varsity Jr. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [map]
