Stewarts Original Hot Dogs
Huntington, WV
Stewarts Original Hot Dogs opened in 1932, selling just root beer and popcorn. The stand added hot dogs and chili in 1933. This is the original building. The root beer is homemade and there are male car hops. There is another location in Kenova, WV. [map]

Farley's Famous Hot Dogs (now Shaffer's Drive-in)
Milton, WV
These Farley's Famous Hot Dogs stands operated originally as Stewarts Original Hot Dogs stands (see above). The Barboursville location was built in 1968. The building is now painted black. [map]

The Milton location was built in 1985. This photo is from 2012. It closed in 2014. Since 2017, it has housed Shaffer's Drive-in. [map]

A third stand in Hurricane, WV opened in 1990. Sometime in the 1990s, these stands left the Stewart's Original Hot Dogs chain and were renamed Farley's Famous Hot Dogs. Farley's root beer is homemade. For more, see this website.

Stewart's Root Beer, no relation to the stands above, has about 25 locations. 21 of them are in New Jersey with four others in Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The company plans to expand to Florida. The first Stewart's drive-in was built in 1924 in Mansfield, OH. That location featured car hops and served only root beer and popcorn. In 1989, Stewart's began bottling its root beer. Today, there are over a dozen flavors distributed nationwide. For more, see this website.

This Stewart's Root Beer was built around 1950. It closed in 2012 and the contents and sign were auctioned off. The building was still vacant in 2021. [map]

This Stewart's Root Beer opened in 1949. The drive-in canopy looks like it was added in the 1960s. The outdoor dining area was added in 1999. This location closed in 2016. It's not known if it will reopen with a new owner or if it be demolished. It was still vacant in 2019. [map]

This Stewart's Root Bear opened around 1953. This stand still has car hops. The neon ice cream cone signs were gone by 2015. This location is closed now. [map]

This Stewart's Root Beer had been here since at least 1960. Does anyone know when it first opened? It had closed by 2017. In 2018, Meat Headz Cheesesteaks opened in the building. The sign was adapted with the neon removed. The building now houses Manni's Fried Chicken. [map]

This Stewart's Root Beer opened in 1967. This stand closed in 2013 and the building was demolished by 2014.

This Stewart's Root Beer features car hop service as well as indoor seating. This photo is from 2003. By 2012, this building was gone.

This Stewart's Root Beer opened in 1969 and is still operating with car hops and the original canopy. The drive-in also serves boat customers who park in the nearby marina and come ashore to eat at Stewart's picnic tables. [map]

The Cross Keys Drive-in opened as a Stewart's Drive-in in 1962. The canopy was added in 1967. It became the Cross Keys Drive-in in 2008. The restaurant still sold Stewart's root beer at that time. These photos are from 2009. In 2013, the business became Big Daddy's Seafood & Rib Ranch. [map]
