The J.J. Newberry chain was founded by John Josiah Newberry in Stroudsburg, PA in 1911. By 1954, there were 475 stores. By 1961, there were 565 stores. The McCrory chain bought out Newberry in 1972 but continued operating the stores with the Newberry name. In 1997, McCrory closed about 300 stores, many of which were operating as Newberry's. In 2000, most of the McCrory and Newberry stores were converted to Dollar Zone stores. In 2002, all of the remaining McCrory and Newberry stores closed. Despite that, many facades still bear original Newberry signs. For more see this website.

The Newberry Building
Bellows Falls, VT
former Newberry's
North Adams, MA
former Newberry's
Mars Hill, ME
The J.J. Newberry's in Bellows Falls was designed in 1928 but not built until 1938. It was originally to have been twice as big but was scaled back with the Depression. Newberry's closed in the 1980s and the space became Berry & Co. until the early 1990s. It then sat vacant for nearly a decade. It was renovated and reopened in 2004 with retail space below and condos above. The original sign was completely restored when this photo was taken in 2003. That sign is gone now. The building now houses the Moon Dog Cafe. [map]

This Newberry's in North Adams opened in 1926 and closed in 1993. Business suffered with the opening of a Kmart and the Berkshire Mall near Pittsfield. However, with the opening of MASS MoCA art museum, the downtown area has been revitalized. In 2002, Moulton's General Store opened in the space. The sign's lettering and awning were created in the style of the original occupant. This photo is from 2005. By 2014, the building's occupant was the Shear Madness Salon. Another similar red sign was installed with the new name. [map]

This Newberry's in Mars Hill closed in the 1980s. When this photo was taken in 2009, the building housed the remains of a closed video store. The sign was still there in 2015 but gone by 2018. The building now houses the Timberwolves restaurant. [map]

This J.J. Newberry Building was built by 1942. It later housed a Haddad's Department Store. It has been vacant for many years. In 2019, the projecting sign piece on the upper corner of the building had been removed. The windows are covered up. For more, see this website. [map]

J.J. Newberry Building
El Paso, TX
J.J. Newberry Building
Los Angeles, CA
The J.J. Newberry Building in El Paso was built in 1911 for Calisher's Dry Goods. There were a few other stores in the building before housing Newberry's (sometime between 1935 and the 1950s). I don't know when Newberry's closed. The corner of the building originally had windows just like those on the sides. It is believed that the windows are still there under the veneer covering. For more, see this website. [map]

The J.J. Newberry Building in Los Angeles was built in 1928. It now houses Hollywood Toys & Costumes. For more, see this website. [map]

former J.J. Newberry
Cincinnati, OH
This building housed J.J. Newberry from around 1936-1949. The building housed a CVS drug store in recent years. The Newberry sign letters on the side of the building remained. These photos are from 2012. In 2021, renovation of the building began. It was discovered that the building was built in the 1890s. After a fire around 1950, the building and the one next door were covered with this brick facade. That facade and the Newberry letters have been removed. The building now houses a Dollar General. [map]

This J.J. Newberry store was built in 1948. Around 1970s, the store closed and began housing Beverly Fabrics for many years. That store closed in 2017. In 2023, preparations were being made for the building to house a pizza restaurant. [map]

This building in Las Vegas housed a Newberry's in the 1960s and 1970s. I assume that was the original tenant. The building now houses Prices Home Furnishings. [map]

This Newberry's in Montgomery was supposedly built in 1900. If so, the exterior appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s. [map]
