The Golden Spur Restaurant opened in the 1920s as a "ride-up" hamburger stand. This sign was built in 1954. It was repainted around 2010. [map]

S&H Green Stamps

Everhart Hotel
Grass Valley, CA
BPOE
Grass Valley, CA
Knights of Columbus
Gridley, CA
This S&H Green Stamps sign hangs at the Santa Cruz Market. These embossed plastic signs were mass-produced and hung at stores that gave out redeemable stamps with purchases. Only a few of these signs are still on display. [map]

The Everhart Hotel was built in 1929. The building was supposedly not used as a hotel until the 1940s. This sign appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s. It may have been adapted from a previous business name. The Everhart panel seems to be covering something up. [map]

The BPOE, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, was established here in 1900. This chapter has been at this location since 1913. This sign might be from the 1950s. [map]

The Knights of Columbus signs are probably from the 1950s. [map]

Cockatoo Hotel
Hawthorne, CA
Phil's Bike Shop
Hawthorne, CA
The Cockatoo Hotel closed in 1996 and was demolished in 2005. The Cockatoo Inn opened as a restaurant in 1946. I don't know when the hotel was built. This sign is probably from the 1950s. There is a Candlewood Suites on the property now but this sign was saved. The first photo above is from 2008. The sign had been repainted by the 2013 photo above. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [map]

I believe Phil's Bike Shop has been here since at least the 1950s. The sign may be from then or the 1960s. This photo is from 2013. In 2016, this sign was partially painted bright green. This bicycling character appeared on a sign in Long Beach, CA. Perhaps there were other Schwinn signs like this or the Hawthorne and Long Beach stores were related. [map]

Cinderella Motel
Hollister, CA
Levitz Furniture [gone]
Huntington Beach, CA
The Cinderella Motel sign appears to be from the 1950s. It is lit at night and the arrow flashes. The sign originally had more neon text at the bottom of the panel. There was also a neon Office/Vacancy sign below it. The bulb arrow is a recent addition. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

These photos of the Levitz Furniture signs were taken in 2008. The signs were removed in 2009. Levitz declared bankruptcy in 2008 and all of the locations have closed. The company's giant sign towers featured spinning neon logos. The company was founded in 1910 and had about 80 locations throughout the West Coast, Southwest, and Northeast. Here are some of their other locations which had older signage: Mesa, AZ, Fresno, CA, Glendale, CA, Sacramento, CA, and San Leandro, CA. For more, see this website.

Shields Date Gardens was founded in 1924 by Floyd and Bess Shields. This 40 foot tall sign and the current building are from 1953. I don't know if this sign ever had neon. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

The Tropics Motor Hotel was built in 1965. It was part of a 1960s chain with five locations in the area, including the now-named Caliente Tropics Resort in Palm Springs. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [map]

The Little Giant Printers sign might be from the 1960s. It doesn't look like it had neon. This photo is from 2015. By 2017, the sign was gone.
