Bob's Fine Cars
Eureka, CA

2008:

2016:
Bob's Fine Cars was established by Bob Crivello in 1961. These signs appear to be from then. Around 2014, the pole sign fell over in a windstorm. The owner has been unable to find anyone to repair the sign. It is laying down in the back of the lot for now. The bulbs have only been on the north-facing side of the sign since at least 2006. I don't know if that's how the sign was designed originally. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Patrick's Candy
Eureka, CA
Travis Shopping Center
Fairfield, CA
The Patrick's Candy signs appear to be from the 1950s. [map]

The Travis Shopping Center was built in 1961 and this sign appears to be from then. The shopping center is named after the nearby Travis Air Force Base. [map]

Fairfield, CA
Fall River Hotel & Cafe
Fall River Mills, CA
This Fairfield Welcome sign spans the main street downtown. The first sign was a Federal Electric sectional bulb sign, installed in 1925. It was replaced with a neon sign in the early 1930s. For more, see this website. [map]

The Fall River Hotel was built in 1939. These signs may be from then. For more, see this website.

Monty's Log Cabin

Paganucci's Motel
& Cocktail Lounge
Firebaugh, CA
Monty's Log Cabin opened in 1936. This sign is probably from the 1950s. For more, see this website. [map]

Paganucci's Motel & Cocktail Lounge opened around 1935. The black sign on top might be from the 1940s or 1950s. The bottom panels are probably from later. [map]

Belli Hardware
Firebaugh, CA
Belli Hardware is still in operation. The black sign probably came first and appears to be from the 1940s or so. The other two signs were mass-produced. There are still some examples of both of these signs at businesses around the country. The hanging General Electric sign is missing the bottom piece which would have had the business name. The plastic "Appliances" letters were backlit with bulbs inside the sign originally. [map]

Silver Tip Lodge
Fish Camp, CA
Masonic Lodge
Fortuna, CA

Fowler, CA
Peter's Market [gone]

The Silver Tip Lodge burned down in 1981 but this sign remains, partly concealed in the trees. [photo thanks Daniel F.] [map]

This Masonic Lodge sign hangs in front of the Eel River Lodge which was established in 1860. This sign is probably from the 1950s. [map]

This directional sign directs traffic from Highway 99 to downtown Fowler. The sign was restored in 2007. For more, see this website. [map]

The Peter's Market sign was probably from the 1950s. "Peter's Markets" would imply that there was more than this location but I don't know of any others. This photo is from 2008. By 2012, this neon sign had been replaced with a plastic box sign.

Chappy's Liquor
Garden Grove, CA
The Grove Motel sign appears to be from the 1950s. However, according to one source, the motel opened in 1960. The sign is now missing a neon panel which read "The Grove" where the plastic panel is now on the two poles. The sign was previously painted blue and pink. For more, see this website. [map]

The Ranch Motel sign is probably from the 1950s. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

This Levitz Furniture chain filed for bankruptcy in 2008. All the stores have closed and I believe all the signs have been removed or adapted. The chain was well-known for its gigantic, revolving pole signs. This sign shown here in Glendale was typical of the company's signs. This photo is from 2008. By 2009, the sign was adapted for Expendables Plus and Cinelease with backlit plastic letters. For more, see this website. [map]

The Seeley's Furniture building was constructed in 1925. The exterior was remodeled in the 1940s to its current look. The store closed in the late 1990s. It remained vacant after that. The building has been restored and is now leasing space for residential, office and retail space. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Zinke's Shoe Repair
Glendale, CA

Central Avenue Pharmacy
Glendale, CA
The Zinke's Shoe Repair chain was established in 1919. This location opened in 1941. This 27 foot long animated sign is from the 1950s. The store closed in 2014 and moved to Pasadena, CA. The sign was donated to MONA (Museum of Neon Art) which is now displaying the sign on the exterior of its building in Glendale. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

There was another Zinke's sign in Glendale which was donated to the Museum of Neon Art in 1983. That sign was destroyed in a car accident. There was another Zinke's sign in Pasadena, CA. There is another sign in a private collection in Lynn, MA. There was another location in Sacramento, CA.

This Central Avenue Pharmacy sign was built and installed in 2015 at the previous location of Zinke's sign. It was built in same shape as the Zinke's sign. I don't believe the sign is animated. [map]
