Church of the Crucifixion

The Church of the Crucifixion was built in 1967. It was designed by Costas Machlouzarides who is also responsible for the Calhoun School. It is tucked away in a residential neighborhood in Harlem. The design was inspired by Le Corbusier's church, Notre-Dame-du-Haut, (Ronchamp, France; built in 1955). The concrete walls have only teensy strip windows between the columns. The Greater Refuge Temple started out as the Harlem Casino in 1910. It was later stripped to the walls and roof to become a Loew's theatre. In 1966, the building was redesigned by Costas Machlouzarides to become the Greater Refuge Temple. For more, see this website. [map]

The Civic Center Synagogue was designed by William N. Breger and built in 1967. It is now known as the Tribeca Synagogue. The building features an undulating, flame-shaped marble façade and a skylit interior. [map]
