Mike's Famous [gone]
New Castle, DE
Mike's Famous, a Harley-Davidson dealer, restaurant, and museum, opened in 1999. It was built on the site of a former Howard Johnson's from 1957. Mike's restored the HoJo's gatehouse and used it as a take-out food stand. It was later used for storage and as a staff office. By 2018, Mike's Famous was closed. By 2019, the gatehouse building had been demolished. For more, see this website.

This former Howard Johnson's was built in 1965. It closed in 1999. The restaurant housed a Waffle House for more than 10 years before closing in 2018. This former Howard Johnson's motor lodge in Gainesville opened in 1961. It closed in 1988. The building later housed a Knights Inn. The restaurant building was demolished. The building now houses the Kampus Inn Gainesville. For more, see this website. [map]

This remodeled Howard Johnson's gatehouse building in Vero Beach was built in 1964. There was already a Howard Johnson's restaurant next door which was demolished in the mid-1990s. The motel is still operating. For more, see this website. [map]

This former Howard Johnson's was built in 1963. The motel was demolished in 2014. The restaurant remained vacant until 2023 when it had been remodeled and was housing BB Rad's Coastal BBQ. For more, see this website. [map]

Treasure Island, FL
This Howard Johnson's in Ocala was constructed in the mid-1960s just north of the building shown above. It was originally an EconoLodge and became a Howard Johnson's in the late 1990s. In 2016, it was renovated by Wyndham Worldwide in the "Renew" program with a nod to the classic Howard Johnson's design. The buildings and motel rooms were painted in the orange and turquoise color scheme. This replica Simple Simon weathervane was added to the lobby/restaurant roof. [map]

This former Howard Johnson's restaurant building in Treasure Island opened around 1962. The building now houses a Waffle House. A motor lodge was built in 1966. That building is gone now. Waffle House's typical design is box-like with a flat roof. For more, see this website. [map]

This Howard Johnson's opened around 1969. By the early 2000s, it was housing a Super 8 Motel. The restaurant's weathervane was nearly blown off the roof during a hurricane in 2004. This Howard Johnson's was built in 1964. It was sold in 2014 to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). The motor lodge and gatehouse were demolished around 2018 for student housing. This former Howard Johnson's was built in 1968 and closed in 1982. It operated as the Best Western Monroe Motor Lodge and later as the Civic Center Inn. The buildings have been vacant for years. For more, see this website. [map]

This Howard Johnson's opened in 1964. Although it is now the Classic Suites & Inns, the gate lodge with its Simple Simon & Lamplighter weathervane remains intact. This former Howard Johnson's is one of the rare Colonial style survivors. It was built in 1957. There were about 200 built with this design. The building was renovated in 2000 for a bank.
