Heckscher Carousel
Hempstead Lake State Park
West Hempstead, NY
The Heckscher Carousel, created by Illions & Sons Carousel Works, was built around 1914. This carousel was donated to the Hempstead Lake State Park by philanthropist August Heckscher in 1931. The carousel stopped operating in 2000. It was restored and reopened in 2005. There are 36 jumping horses and two chariots. Two of the Illions horses are from Philadelphia's Willow Grove Park carousel and two others are new carvings. For more, see this website.
